CHAPTER 5
I’d been trying to piece together what had happened at the party, but I couldn’t. I’d spent the entire weekend trying to push away the black fog that was masking the rest of the night from my memories, but I couldn’t. When I got to school on Monday, I was determined to find Sam. It wasn’t because I was going to thank him like my dad had told me to do. I wanted to know what he knew. I wanted to know what had happened during the time that I couldn’t remember.
I found him standing outside his locker. He looked pretty tired, as though he’d been partying all weekend. “We need to talk,” I said firmly.
“What’s up, pussy cat?” he asked me with a snake like smile. “Did your dad tell you that I got you home all safe and sound?”
“He did,” I nodded. “What happened after the party, Sam?” I asked him outright.
He seemed surprised for a moment, as though I’d stumbled onto a secret, which I shouldn’t have done. His expression quickly calmed down though, and a cocky glaze replaced any traces of fear that had been visible.
“You don’t remember?” he asked. His eyes peered into mine and I could feel him poking around, trying to find answers to questions that he was unwilling or unable to ask.
“I remember leaving the barn and that’s it.”
He looked relieved. “Well, you were pretty wasted, so I walked you back home.”
“I wasn’t wasted, though,” I said. “I only had one drink that night and it was the orange juice that you gave me.”
He shifted his weight from one side to the other and shrugged. “I don’t know what to tell you. I saw you stumbling out of the barn, so I thought I’d help. I don’t know anything else.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“I don’t really care.”
I stared at him. There was something he wasn’t telling me. There was something that he knew which I didn’t and it was driving me crazy.
“Stay away from me,” I told him with a warning glare, so that he knew that I meant it.
“That’s not what you were saying after the party,” he leered at me. “In fact, you were practically begging for it.”
I walked away from him. It was either walking away or punching him straight in the nose. I think I would have preferred punching him. I think I would have preferred wiping the arrogant look from his face, but it would have only brought more trouble to my door and I knew that I was already on thin ice with my father.
“Hey,” a hand reached out and touched me on the shoulder and I jumped and spun around. It was Danny.
“Sorry about the party on Friday. My mom totally forced me to stay in and help her spring clean the house.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I mumbled. I couldn't meet his eyes.
“Did you have a good time at the party?” he asked. I think he could sense that something wasn't right.
“I don’t remember.”
“You don’t remember?”
“No.
